Interleukin-2 (IL-2) plays a critical role in the key functions of the immune system.
Specifically, it interacts with specific receptors on “target cells,” initiating the growth, differentiation, and proliferation of T and B lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages, oligodendroglial cells, and Langerhans cells. Interleukin-2 activates the functions of cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells, enhances immune responses, and promotes the activation of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and the formation of lymphokine-activated killer cells. IL-2 also stimulates the production of interferon-gamma, tumor necrosis factor, and interleukin-1, which enhances antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antitumor immune responses.
